Ari Aster is a deeply bigoted person. All of his feature length films have either disabled or black antagonists except for his most recent, which is about a man with severe mental illness. He even did a short called Munchausen. That being said, I’m not the person to speak to racism, so I will focus on Midsommar and Hereditary.
In Midsommar the bad guys are the cult, but their unseen leader is a visibly disabled person who is the victim of decades (centuries?) of incest. The only time we see this character is when they commit murder. To make the head of the cult a “monstrous” looking disabled person while having no disabled protagonists very starkly shows Ari Aster’s position on the subject. Furthermore, it is indescribably despicable to continue to demonise victims/survivors of incest. A reported one-third of women are sexually assaulted in their lifetimes, and it is usually done by a relative. You know several people who are the victims/survivors of incest. It is completely unacceptable to continue to villainise—literally!—people purely because they were sexually assaulted.
