Review 8: Hereditary

As for Hereditary Milly Shapiro has repeatedly said that they intentionally exaggerated the appearance of her facial deformity, and that she didn’t like it. She posted a TikTok with the text “Being in a movie and playing a character where they purposely made you look your worst and then millions of people seeing it” over the audio “I think this is affecting me mentally. Like long term shit it’s gonna fuck with me. I think that this is gonna fuck me up.” I want to be clear with the following: I do not judge her for taking this role, and I do not in any way blame her for what came out of it. Considering Ari Aster’s other works, I entirely put this on him and the other higher ups. That being said, they hired someone with a visible deformity and intentionally exaggerated said deformity in order to dramatize the evil of the character. This isn’t an opinion. This is documented fact. This is ableism. This is—again, literally!—demonising disability. I understand if you can separate this from the film and still enjoy it, but there is absolutely no excuse to support Ari Aster.
